New Products in Stand-Up pouches -

Together with vegetable farmer Jucker in Seegraben, Schoni & Masshard in Hinwil developed and implemented a new packaging concept for Pumpkins. The pulp of the giant pumpkins, some of them weighing up to 25kg, is shredded by Schoni and filled into prefinished stand-up pouches as a ready to eat salad.

The product is carried by the major chain stores Coop and Migros, but Schoni also distributes the salad through other channels.

The stand-up pouches are a 2-ply POLIVEL composite, flexographically printed with 7 colours.

Stand-up pouches with pouring spouts -

With its patented "Clean Clic" system, IPN serves the packaging market with intelligent solutions for closing polymer pouches.

The "Clean Clic" closures (screw caps, twist closures, dispenser nozzles, etc.) can be integrated in composite film pouches made of a wide variety of materials in different thicknesses. The converted pouches, mostly stand-up types, are filled via a connector. For this purpose, IPN has developed proprietary, high-efficiency filling machines.

The "Clean Clic" system is used in the food industry (liquid goods), for pharmaceuticals, for automotive products, and in the domain of personal care.

Wipf AG provides IPN with composite-film stand-up pouches which meet sophisticated technical specifications, for instance as regards pasteurisation, sterilisation, or aggressive products.

Customized packaging for fish and seafood -

Fish and seafood are important protein sources and a welcome, nutritious alternative to meat.

Smoked salmon in particular is highly popular on a global scale. But consumers are also embracing novel products like surimi, introduced some time ago. Surimi is made of several varieties of fish and then pressed into different shapes.

Dried fish snacks also appeal to consumers, mainly in Nordic countries.

Wipf supplies the ideal packaging for each of these products, both as regards the composite film and the technical design.

All of the pouches shown below were converted by Wipf: the zippered stand-up pouch for the "Bouchees Marines" by Ocilia of France, the side-sealed pouches with zipper and Euro-hole for fish snacks by Torrfisk of Norwak, as well as the salmon in the side-sealed pouches marketed by Kirkland of Norway and by Cyril of Ireland - one with a zipper and one with a Euro-hole.

In side-sealed pouches, the side without the zipper or Euro-hole is left open so that after packaging, only one last side seam must be sealed.

All packaging systems are made of POLIVEL composites with different material combinations.

AROMA - The New Coffee Generation -

Equipped with a Wicovalve® aroma-protection valve, a laser scored easy-open feature, and a reusable "zipper" closure the stand-up pouches provides everything for new aroma coffee.

The freshly roasted whole-bean coffee is perfectly protected in a three-layer composite using aluminium as the barrier layer. The Wicovalve® one-way valve allows gases generated in the package to escape without impairing aroma. The laser-scored easy-open feature makes it a cinch to tear open the package, and it can be securely reclosed the zipper closure.

The smart and contemporary motif on these pouches is printed with four-colour flexography.

With forty locations, Aroma Cafes is one of the leading firms in the fast-growing café and café-bar market in Great Britain. In March 1999, the company was acquired by McDonald's, the worlds largest restaurant chain. Outside Britain, Aroma Cafes have also been established in Argentina, and in December 2000, the first Aroma Café in Zurich was opened.

Wipf packages in the pharmaceutical industry -

Fresenius Medical Care is the world's leading provider of products and therapies for the treatment of patients with chronic renal failure.

Today, there are almost one million people with chronic renal failure worldwide. The kidneys of these patients can no longer filter metabolic waste products out of their blood and eliminate them with the urine. They need regular, life-saving dialysis treatment.

There are two types of dialysis treatment: peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis removes waste products from the blood via the peritoneum, the membrane covering the intestinal organs located in the abdominal cavity. Using a surgically implanted catheter, a sterile dialysis solution is introduced into, and removed from, the peritoneal cavity several times a day; the peritoneum itself acts as the dialysis membrane. Most peritoneal dialysis treatments can be self-administered by patients at home or at work.

Hemodialysis is performed at dialysis clinics. The dialysis machine pumps the blood from a special vascular access port in the patient's arm into the dialyser which functions as the actual artificial kidney and removes the metabolic waste products from the blood. A dialysis solution washes out the waste products. The purified blood is then returned to the patient's circulatory system.

Wipf AG manufactures the external packaging for these dialysis solutions (sterile applications), consisting of a three-layer composite with SiOx as the barrier layer.

New Polyethylene 'peelable' seal coating -

Designated 'PEEL 2000', a new sealing layer for composite flexible alufoil laminates has been introduced by EAFA member Wipf AG. The company claims that the new formula represents an advance in the technology of peelable pouch openings. The aluminum layer assists the rapid heat transfer thanks to its good conductivity.

A larger sealing temperature 'window' has facilitated shorter matching make-ready times and fewer seam quality variations when production runs are started up. PEEL 2000 provides improved 'hot tack' properties, and stronger seam strengths are achieved without detracting from the ease of opening. The composite alufoil film does not easily tear, and the coating does not shred or fray when the pack is pulled open.
